Belle awoke in the early hours of the morning snuggled close to Clopin. For the first time in a long while, she felt perfectly relaxed and content and not at all worried about anything at all. With a soft stretch, she tucked the blankets closer in around herself. Clopin blinked and then turned his head to her. He smiled.
“Alright?”
Belle nodded, slowly, thoughtfully. “Clopin, will bạn tell me how bạn got that brand? What were bạn in trouble for?”
Clopin sighed. “Please don’t think badly of me for it when I tell you, Belle.”
“I won’t. I could never...” Belle took a deep breath. “I promise I won’t.”
“Well, bạn remember that ngày bạn and your family gave us that money?”
Belle nodded.
“It all started a few years after that. After my uncle and aunt died, I had to be the sole provider from the family. I was caught stealing a loaf of bánh mỳ, bánh mì from a house...I could have convinced the family to let me take it if the guards hadn’t arrested me. I spent five years in prison. When I got out, I learned my cousins had gone on the run from Paris because they were scared of getting caught. I stayed...well, it’s my home. That was three years cách đây I got out.”
“And they branded bạn for that?” Belle was horrified. “Just for trying to feed your family?”
“Well, technically it was theft.”
“But if bạn were desperate!”
Clopin glanced at her. “You really don’t think badly of me for it?”
“No.” Belle met his gaze. “There’s nothing bạn could do hoặc say that could ever make me think badly of you. Except maybe...they sort of things...that Frollo did...”
“Belle, I would never do that to you.”
“I know.”
Clopin kissed her again and Belle closed her eyes, enjoying every một giây of it. Now she just knew that she had found home. Being with Clopin...she was at home. In her mind, she found herself wondering if her parents would approve of this...and then inwardly she scolded herself for doubting that they ever would. They had, after all, been Những người bạn of gypsies. She almost giggled as she wondered just what Frollo would think if he knew that the young woman he had tried to bring up as a female version of himself was in giường with a gypsy. Obviously they had only shared a giường for the night but in Frollo’s book that was bad.
And yet he could justify his own sinful actions towards her bởi pinning the blame on the fact that she was a woman!
She hated him now, she knew, thêm than anything.
But why was she even thinking about him now? She would never see him again. She was an toàn, két an toàn here with Clopin. Almost as if he knew what she was thinking, Clopin broke the Kiss and murmured softly to her “Belle, bạn never need to be afraid of anything as long as I’m here.”
Belle smiled up at him. “With bạn I never feel afraid.”
“Hey!” There was a rap outside the curtain as Tiana rapped her ladle against the wall. “Clopin, are bạn getting up, lazy bones, hoặc what? You’re gonna miss breakfast! Belle seems to have slept in too!”
Belle stifled a laugh. “Alright, Tiana, keep your hair on,” laughed Clopin.
Belle was able to slip out of his room unnoticed bởi anyone else. He joined her at the bàn a một giây later and they exchanged a secret smile. Well, it wasn’t quite as secret as they thought. Jack noticed, as did Pocahontas.
“Belle,” she đã đưa ý kiến later, quietly, as the three of them cleared away the breakfast things, “I don’t mean to pry but has something happened between bạn and Clopin?”
Belle blushed. “Maybe...”
“I knew it,” grinned Pocahontas.
“That’s great!” exclaimed Jack.
“Well, we just kissed, that’s all,” Belle said, piling up the plates.
“It starts with a kiss,” Pocahontas replied, patting her shoulder. “Then it becomes a relationship. Trust me, I know what I’m talking about.”
“Think I’ll be alright, then?”
“You’ll be fine, Belle. Personally, I think bạn two are meant to be.”
“Really?” Belle felt a glimmer of something thêm than hope.
“Ah, don’t go getting soppy on me, Belle,” teased Jack. “I was beginning to like you.”
“Why don’t bạn go and wash up?” Pocahontas grinned, cuffing him.
“Yes, Ma’m,” he replied, with a mock salute.
“Cheeky,” smiled Pocahontas as he sauntered off towards the kitchen, loaded with breakfast things. “If bạn two ever have kids, Belle, make sure they don’t turn out like him.”
Belle’s blush deepened. “I don’t know if we’ll ever get as far as-”
“Hey, Belle!” Something tugged her dress. It was Lilo, grinning up on her. “Did bạn find that book about the voodoo doctor yet?”
Belle smiled, glad of a distraction. “As a matter of fact I did, last night, after bạn were in bed. Would bạn like me to read it to you?”
“Yeah!” Then, remembering her manners, Lilo added, humbly, “Please.”
Belle smiled and went off to the find the book. It was called “The Island of Mama Odi.” She brought it back to the bàn where Lilo was already sitting, in all eagerness. “You sure this won’t scare bạn too much?”
“No, I can take it,” Lilo insisted. “I tình yêu voodoo.”
Belle smiled. “I know. Ok, here we go, then. Chapter 1: The Sinking of the Hispaniola. My name, though it be of little consequence to bạn now, is James Hawkins. bạn may call me Jim. My story begins with the ngày I set sail on the great trading ship the Hispaniola. My ship mates were Long John Silver, Joshamee Gibbs, Elizabeth Swan, Sinbad Dream, bến du thuyền, bến tàu, marina Royal, and the joint Captains, Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa, who were always rowing about which way the ship was going...”
Lilo listened to the whole story, fascinated bởi it, as Belle had been at her age. Only, Belle also remembered, she had been a bit scared bởi the wicked Mama Odi and her voodoo experiments. But Lilo wasn’t afraid at all. She got a little sad at the end when Mama Odi met her doom, but when the story was over, she exclaimed “That was the best story ever!”
Then, to Belle’s surprise, the young girl hugged her tightly. “Thank you, Belle. Could bạn read it again to me tomorrow night?”
Belle laughed and patted her back. “I don’t see why not.”
Lilo scampered off in excitement, possibly to tell Shanti hoặc her father all about the story, Belle thought. She smiled, suddenly, wondering what it would be like if she and Clopin did have children of their own, someday, what they would be like, what they would be called...
Steady, Belle, she thought to herself. It’s far too early to be thinking about that, surely?
Even as she was thinking it, Clopin suddenly came up to her. “So...what else have bạn got planned for today?” he asked her.
Belle beamed at him. “I might go out...but I’d rather Esme didn’t paint me up this time.”
“Belle, bạn could get recognised...”
“Not if I wear my áo choàng and keep my mui xe up. I can hide my face.”
Clopin looked doubtful, but then nodded. “Fine, but I’m going with you.”
“Fine.” Belle smiled up at him. “You can be my bodyguard.”
Clopin grinned. “I don’t mind guarding your body at all, Belle.”
“Oh, please!” Iago squawked, shooting past. “I’ve just eaten!”
Belle laughed. “You’ve never had a relationship with anyone, then, Iago?”
“Love’s too mushy for me,” he retorted.
“Ignore him, Belle,” Clopin replied, taking her hand.
“How can I when he’s coming with us too?” Belle smiled.
“What? Forget it! I’m not going out if bạn two are going to be all mushy!”
“Oh, that is a shame,” Belle smiled. She knew that Iago had a weakness...and that weakness was food. “We were going to go around all the best trái cây markets...just to browse, but maybe the sellers wouldn’t miss an táo, apple hoặc two if bạn were to sneak one...but bạn can’t very well do that whilst you’re still here, can you?”
“Awk!” Iago shook his head. “Alright, alright! But keep the kissing to a minimum!”
At first, it seemed like a good idea to Belle; keeping her face well covered as she, Clopin, Iago, hoa nhài and Aladdin và cây đèn thần ventured out into the streets. They didn’t see Frollo hoặc his new friend Gaston, so Belle allowed herself to relax.
Clopin took her hand as they made their way past Notre Dame. Belle looked up at the great cathedral that she had once called a home. In her tim, trái tim of hearts, she couldn’t help missing it. It had, after all, been a sanctuary for a while. If only Frollo hadn’t seen fit to...she missed the Archdeacon and the other priests who had been so kind to her. She couldn’t help stopping and Clopin was brought up short bởi her hand. “Belle?”
“Hey, what are bạn dawdling for?” asked Aladdin, turning to them.
“It’s just...” Belle stared upwards at the chuông, bell tower as they began to peel. Clopin was right; they were beautiful, a symphony of sound. Her tim, trái tim swelled. “I miss it.”
“Hey! That’s him!”
The four of them pivoted in time to see three of Frollo’s guards running towards them. Evidently they had recognised Clopin. “Uh-oh!” Clopin muttered, releasing Belle’s hand automatically as they prepared to run. Without thinking, Belle turned around and began to run...in completely the wrong direction.
“No, not that way!” hoa nhài shouted.
Belle whipped her head around to see where they were, and if the guards were behind her. Her mui xe was slipping down over her eyes, and as she adjusted it, she ran into someone.
“Oh, sorry,” she stammered, looking up...into Frollo’s cruel smirk.
“So, bạn thought bạn could escape, did you? Do bạn know I’ve nearly torn Paris apart looking for you, bạn little daemon!”
Belle screamed as he grabbed hold of her. Then, in a flash of smoke, Clopin appeared out of nowhere and buffeted into the older man. Frollo, releasing Belle, staggered backwards and fell into the gutter.
“Here!” A rope fell down from the building beside them. Looking up, Belle saw Aladdin và cây đèn thần beckoning her from the rooftop.
“Go on, Belle, quick!” Clopin đã đưa ý kiến as Frollo was recovering from the blow.
Belle seized hold of the rope and Aladdin và cây đèn thần pulled her up onto the roof. hoa nhài was already up there too. “Come on,” she cried, seizing Belle’s hand and pulling her along.
“But Clopin-!”
“He’ll catch up! Hurry!”
Together, the three of them hurried over the rooftops, slipping and sliding a little on tiles, Belle thêm than the rest, but the other helped her keep her balance. Belle’s tim, trái tim was racing. How could it all be going wrong so quickly? It was terrifying.
Eventually they leapt down into a dark alleyway and leaned against the wall. “We won’t be an toàn, két an toàn for long,” Aladdin và cây đèn thần pointed out. “Frollo’s guards run all over the city.”
“Can’t we go back home?” Belle asked.
“Eventually, but we’ll have to try and outwit them all first,” hoa nhài pointed out.
Suddenly, Clopin was beside them again, and Iago too. “I’ve led them a merry dance for a while,” he panted. “But it won’t stop them forever.”
“It’s me they’re after,” Belle said, mournfully. “I’m sorry to have dragged bạn guys into this.”
hoa nhài patted her hand. “It’s ok. We’re used to it, remember.”
Aladdin và cây đèn thần glanced at Clopin. “Belle needs to be safe. We can’t let Frollo find her.”
Clopin nodded, slowly. He knew what Aladdin và cây đèn thần was getting at and it hurt him to think of it happening...but her safety had to come first.
“Belle, bạn need to leave Paris.”
“What?” Belle stared at him, her tim, trái tim pounding. “Where would I go?”
“If bạn get to Calais alright, bạn can get a thuyền to anywhere,” Aladdin và cây đèn thần said, thoughtfully.
“No!” Belle seized Clopin’s hands. “Please don’t make me leave!”
Sensing they needed a moment, Aladdin và cây đèn thần turned to Jasmine. “I wonder if we could find a horse around here...”
They ran in the direction of the stables. Clopin pulled Belle closer to him. “Belle...you need to. I can’t let him find you.”
“And I can’t leave you,” Belle began, feeling tears fill her eyes.
“It won’t be for long. I’ll come and find you. Wherever bạn are.”
“But-!”
“Belle.” Clopin cupped her face, aching at the thought of letting her go. But he knew he had to. “I tình yêu you. That’s why bạn need to go. And don’t come back here alone. Wait for me to come to you.”
“I tình yêu bạn too,” Belle whispered.
Aladdin và cây đèn thần cleared his throat. “Um, we found a horse.”
Belle looked at them all. She knew they just wanted her to be safe, and in her tim, trái tim of hearts she knew that they were right. She had to leave...and for their safety, just as much as her own. Taking a shuddering breath, she looked at Clopin. “I’m ready.”
hoa nhài came up and hugged her. So did Aladdin.
“Iago,” Clopin said, “go with her.”
“What? Really?” Iago was surprised.
“Yes, really. Look after her.”
Belle suddenly flung herself at Clopin and kissed him, his admission of tình yêu washing over her. Clopin didn’t protest for a good ten giây before gently breaking the kiss. “Belle, go. Just go.”
Belle clambered into the saddle and looked to Aladdin. “Which way’s Calais?”
“That way.” He pointed.
“Good luck,” added Jasmine.
“Hurry,” was all Clopin said.
Belle deleayed no longer. Taking the reins, she turned the horse in the right direction and urged it to run as fast as it could manage. “Hey, wait up!” Iago cried, flying after her.
She threw one last glance over her shoulder at the heartbreakingly beautiful sight of Notre Dame. “I will return! I will!”
Then, with a heavy heart, she rode onwards towards Calais.
“Alright?”
Belle nodded, slowly, thoughtfully. “Clopin, will bạn tell me how bạn got that brand? What were bạn in trouble for?”
Clopin sighed. “Please don’t think badly of me for it when I tell you, Belle.”
