What's an idea that needs retiring?

The idea that a thing is good because it is 'natural', hoặc bad because it is 'unnatural'. This "appeal to nature" is very commonplace throughout our society- one only has to venture out to their local siêu thị to see its manifestation- but it is also an entirely fallacious one. The mere "naturalness" of something is unrelated to its positive hoặc negative qualities – natural things can be bad hoặc harmful (such as infant death, hoặc belladonna), and unnatural things can be good (such as clothes hoặc medication). It's seen very often in advocacy for alternative medicine, organic food, anti-vaccination and anti-GMO rhetoric, etc. It can have very disastrous results, such as when cancer sufferers refuse actual medical procedures in favour of alternative, so-called 'natural' methods that do not actually work. If at all, these people only seek out proper treatment when they thousands of dollars poorer and when the cancer has spread, often rendering it incurable when it was formerly very treatable. "Appeal to nature" is an idea that can have devastating consequences, and often on the most vulnerable.

"Money can't buy happiness."

It's very much the saying of someone who has never worried about where they are going to sleep at night and when they tiếp theo get a meal.
