Critical Analysis of Twilight Article: The 100 năm Old Virgin

Lately, I've heard and seen jokes and các bình luận about Edward being "pathetic" hoặc "gay" because he was a 100 năm old virgin. I've written this bài viết to state that I see no problem in him being a virgin. I feel that virginity is not something to poke fun at. It simply means that someone wants to save themselves for that special someone whom they are going to spend the rest of their life with. I myself am a virgin and plan to stay that way until I get married.

However, I am somewhat confused. If Edward has lived for 100 years and has yet to give himself to anyone, then why does he decide to have sex with Bella when they've only known each other for a short period of time? A few years is probably nothing to a vampire, so why has he decided to make such a decision?

Now, it's stated (quite obviously) that he married Bella because he was in tình yêu with her (as many have said, I feel that it is lust and not love, but that's not the point I'm trying to make at the moment), which I feel is the proper reason to give yourself to someone. This confuses me; if Edward falls in tình yêu with Bella so quickly, then why has he not fallen in tình yêu with anyone before Bella?

To me, it's not a matter of not "doing it" with anyone before (that's a personal descision that he has made), but rather the fact that Bella is in his life for only two years and he decides that she is the one with whom he wants to be with.

I find this unrealistic, due to the fact that Edward has probably met many young women in his long life. For a vampire (or, as I refer to them as, Meyerpire) to give themselves to someone, that would mean being committed to them for eternity. If bạn think about it, wouldn't bạn want to consider if the person bạn are going to marry is worth spending eternity with? It may take a while (certainly thêm than two years) to make that descision. I just feel that it's unrealistic for a ngẫu nhiên girl to waltz in front of a Meyerpire and BOOM! they're "eternally in love".

I know the reason Meyer made Edward a virgin was to make the story thêm romantic. After all, it is a nice thought: he's never được trao himself to anyone before, which means that Bella is the first one he's been with. But, as she has done before, Meyer is too caught up nghề viết văn an "epic romantic fantasy" that she fails to use realism and logic in her plots.

germany123 first article in a long time on this spot i actually bothered reading cause it IS something that hasnt been said 37827773887772 times. if someone sells the point of bella being weak or edward being gay cause he sparkles AS THEIR OWN DISCOVERY one more time..i shall..i dont know what BUT..i will do something BAD! in my opinion two years isnt all that fast to be honest. i doubt you can ever make a decision to say: i will be with this person for the rest of my life no matter what...let alone eternity! its just a matter of ASSUMING you can/ will be with them. *points to divorce statistics* so of course in the meyerverse the whole thing wouldnt have worked if edward had fathered 53 children in his "lifetime" had 15 ex-wives and multiple affairs. just like in his 100 years he never commitTED a crime and spent 25 years in jail..HA TRY TO EXECUTE ME WHY DONT YOU...ACTUALLY could someone write a fanfic aboot eddie in prison? on death row? and then sitting on the electrical chair chewing gum? can he chew? i digress.... for the sake of the perfect romance it HAD to be ONLY BELLA IN 100 YEARS..but i disagree on the 2 years not being enough. i also think that there should be a sequel: "bella and edward"- 250 years later. where the book revolves around them fighting aboot who should take the trash oot and do the laundry and OMG I HATE THE WAY YOU SLURP YOUR BLOOD ITS DISGUSTING! THIS would be a book i would buy.

VictoriNoRisuu I really enjoyed reading your statement. It's really reasonable & nice to read. I can't completely agree with the fact they got merried too soon. For me it took about one year of realtionship to make a decision about getting merried. On the other hand, I & my future husband have known each other for six years then, so I'm not sure if this counts... but whatever - I think that 2 years are good timimg to know each other && decide about commomn future. At least just for me. The thing I totally agree with you is the fact, that Edward virginity is not the problem. The problem is the fact, that Bella is the first person he ever fell in love with! That's one of ther most emotionally unrealistic things in the book. He lived 100 yers. We, as "normal people" fell in love 2, 3 or more times until we get like 30... I'm not talking about some crush or fling, but real love. And he wasn't able to do in 100 years? I get it was meant to be romantic, but for me it was ridiculous. Adding some tragic love in his part wouldn't make his character less romantic, but way more interesting. And realistic. At least for me. Thank you for shearing your thoughts with us!

ponyboyjohnny i hate twilight but i don't have an issue with edward being a virgin, or getting married in 2 years. what i hate about him is that he sparkles, is emotionally abusive towards bella, and that he's sexist.

rachaelwsz germany123 never fails to make me giggle like a typical school girl. :) Yeap, I do agree with you about the whole virginity thing. I think the reason others poke fun of Edward for being a virgin is because it's strange that Edward kept his virginity for 100 years++. In that time span, he never fell in love or felt lust or anything of that sort. But when Bella came along *BA DA BING!*, he's like "I love you.", "I'll protect you.", "You're like a drug/heroin to me.", etc... So, it seems kinda unnatural... but like I said before- anything is possible in Meyer's world.

Frizzhead In one of the books Carlisle says to bella "you have changed him so much" (or something along those lines) maybe Bella appearing put him through puberty and you all know how pubescent boys act. Though i agree it is extremely un-realistic

sleazy_weasley I couldn't care less about Edward being a virgin, too, but I 100% agree about Eddie not falling in love with any other women before Bella. He's seen hundreds of them, and has attracted many of them, and yet he just denies them ... why, because he can read their minds. And just when the one person whose mind he can't reads enters his life, he decides to run after her. -_- I realized that statement barely made any sense but whatever. :/ Good article! :)

LowriLorenza89 I don't think the "only Bella" issue is as unbelievable as you claim, for a few reasons. 1. Firstly, you need to remember that Edward was only willing to sleep with Bella after they'd married. This would mean that to be willing to sleep with someone else previously, he'd need to be in love enough to want to get married. He wouldn't be interested in a one night stand, a fling or even pre-marriage dating. His partner would also have to agree to marriage, and to waiting until they were married before they had sex. 2. Edward being a vampire, and a "vegetarian" vampire, is another factor. He probably didn't consider a relationship with any human before Bella, being afraid of harming the human woman or just worried about exposing his vampire secret. I don't think a relationship with a "non-vegetarian" vampire would work because there'd be too much conflict about their different diets. He only knows a handful of female "vegetarian" vampires. He isn't attracted to any of those, considers about half of them to be family, and most are also in other relationships. 3. I think his telepathy is also a factor. Being able to hear a potential partner could be off-putting. Everyone has thoughts which are embarrassing or portray them in a negative light sometimes. I agree that the real reason Edward was written as a virgin was that Stephenie Meyer found the idea of both Edward and Bella being virgins romantic, though. She was also probably influenced by her own beliefs. And maybe she thought it was more realistic that Edward would stick to the values he'd been raised to as a human, rather than the vampire nymphomania portrayed in some other works.

I saw a review of the new Twilight movie, and in a generally negative review one thing đã đưa ý kiến in defence of the movie was that Bella doesn't dress like a skank (paraphrased) and she just looks like a normal girl, which was called a good message as they felt it's healthier for girls to see Bella/Kristin Stewart on screen than someone like Angelina Jolie.
