(12/04/08 Update: I'm currently cleaning up the dead đường dẫn in this article. bạn can also

Ahh Christmas. The tree, the stockings, the mistletoe and - of course - the holiday ti vi programming.

Some of my fondest giáng sinh memories were spent in front a of ti vi watching such classics as the animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer hoặc one of the myriad versions of Dickens' 'A giáng sinh Carol'.

So without further ado, I am presenting bạn with my big, big danh sách of holiday specials. I've tried to categorize the danh sách into subsections to make it a little thêm bearable and consumable. The danh sách is in no particular order, though the first section, 'essentials', are (in my humble opinion) the cream of the crop. I should also note that I've only included programs for which I was able to find online video so you'll notice some glaring omissions (like 'A giáng sinh Story' and 'Miracle on 34th Street).

Another Holiday season is upon us and bạn know what that means: break out the egg nog, light up the tree, put up the stockings, take out a một giây mortgage for the credit card bill and ngọn lửa, chữa cháy up The Carpenter's giáng sinh album (turn it up to 11, will you?).

It also means it's time for another danh sách of giáng sinh video goodies.

So kick back and get ready to enjoy another batch of holiday fun. Oh, and in case bạn missed last year's danh sách be sure to check out link

So without further ado...

The Essentials
I'm reposting these from last year's danh sách because these are the items most people want to see. If bạn can only watch a couple of holiday specials, these are the ones to watch. This is the proverbial 'hall of fame' of giáng sinh programming.

Is the word "Xmas" a result of the commercialization of Christmas?
Every holiday season, newspapers, malls and ti vi commercials urge bạn to take advantage of "Xmas sales and specials." The word "Xmas" is easier to use in advertisements, and as a result, it's become associated with the commercialization of Christmas. But some Christians take offense to
the word "Xmas" and have called for the abolishment of this truncated version of the word "Christmas." So why is it so controversial, and where did it originate?

For some, Xmas is a dreaded four-letter word that reemerges every holiday season. The phrase is literally and symbolically distasteful, according to its critics. Not only does it "X" out Christ, the religious figure at the tim, trái tim of the holiday, it also represents a secularization of Christmas, what some see as focusing thêm on the presents under the giáng sinh cây and less on religious observance and the birth of baby Jesus.

Other Christians, who feel that Xmas takes the "Christ" out of "Christmas," believe that the letter X is used because of its resemblance to a cross, hoặc to avoid the proclamation of Jesus' name. This modern trend, they say, must be bucked, so that people can be...

What is Christmas all about?
Last edited 21 December 2007

If a link is to be believed, most of us fanpop users live in cities hoặc their suburbs. For those of us who do, I issue another challenge, but this time it's not designing your own game hoặc nghề viết văn poetry. This is a giáng sinh challenge, so it follows in the spirit of the holiday. We can all get caught up in the glamour of the holiday (in both meanings of the word), but regardless of your belief in the divinity of Jesus, the holiday is to commemorate his birth, and since most of the history we have of him is about his caring for the disenfranchised, poor and sick, I challenge us all to do the same this holiday season.

Some background
It's my habit to bring snacks to meetings I attend at work (so that, if nothing else of worth happens, at least there's good victuals to be had). Recently I bought groceries for my family at link, only to discover that I'd accidentally bought a product that my wife and son couldn't eat due to their allergies. Whoops! Yesterday I realized that I had a little...

Back when I was a kid watching giáng sinh specials on TV, Mrs. Claus was invariably portrayed as a sweet but dowdy older woman of slightly plump stature. She could cook a mean pie and reminded bạn of your Grandma. Of course, we loved her and so did Santa.

But did bạn ever wonder what Mrs. Claus might have looked like when she was younger? I mean, I assume she must've be smokin' (natch).

So why is it that so many of the classic holiday programs hiển thị us a Santa Claus surrounded bởi androgynous little elves and a matronly Mrs. Claus? I mean, it's cold up at the North Pole. Surely Santa isn't adverse to surrounding himself with some helpers who are easy on the eye and can get the ol' temperature up.

Thankfully, modern ti vi has mostly solved this problem. Not only is the modern ngày Mrs. Claus hotter than her predecessors, but Santa's other helpers have also gotten an upgrade in the youth and sexiness categories. So here are some giáng sinh babes likely to increase the the blood boiling on any elf, reindeer hoặc fat bearded guys with a penchant for red robes.

Santa Claus would need a hell of a lot more reindeers than this to tow that massive amount of loot for all the world's Christian children...
This is a reprint of a classic bài viết that ran in the now defunct Spy Magazine about 15 years cách đây hoặc so. This bài viết is all over the internets now, though few sites properly attribute the original source. In any event, here's the reprinted text to this holiday classic.

Consider the following:

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. But there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of giáng sinh to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical).

I really enjoy the giáng sinh season. I tình yêu the phim chiếu rạp that get played every year. I tình yêu the giáng sinh âm nhạc radio station. I tình yêu the lights. I tình yêu the snow. I tình yêu the togetherness. I tình yêu the Claymation. I tình yêu wrapping presents. I tình yêu unwrapping presents. I tình yêu making cards and presents for my Những người bạn and my teachers. I tình yêu going to the mall and finding the perfect gift. I tình yêu going shopping with my friends. I tình yêu the classroom giáng sinh parties that are against school rules. I tình yêu going to Petsmart with my mom to get vớ, thả, còn hàng stuffers for my cats. I tình yêu waking up early on giáng sinh morning and being too excited to go back to sleep because bạn know how much everyone is going to tình yêu their gifts. I tình yêu not eating breakfast and going straight to the kẹo in my stocking. I tình yêu đọc the book my sister got me right away. I tình yêu watching my mèo play in the discarded wrapping part.

However, I do not tình yêu Jesus. I don't hate Jesus. I am not a Christian and I have never met him so I have no reason to tình yêu him. I feel it is disrespectful to Christians for me to celebrate part of the holiday. This is why I have come up with Giftmas. Giftmas is giáng sinh for...

I've always preferred the term giáng sinh in opposed to Xmas, it looks better when it's written in cards hoặc a part of giáng sinh decorations, and what's an Xmas anyway? I know that it's some type of abbreviation for the word giáng sinh but it doesn't look right and it sounds worse if bạn try saying it, giáng sinh has become so commercialized over the years it seems as though many of us have Mất tích our giáng sinh cheer and the meaning of giáng sinh isn't what it used to be, however this is my first giáng sinh on fanpop and it's great to have a spot dedicated to this festive season, I am the youngest of eight and I try to keep in touch with my family as much as possible and even thêm so throughout the happy holidays, even though they live all over the place and some even interstate, family and Những người bạn are very valuable and important to me, so I try to keep in touch with them as often as possible and enjoy giáng sinh to the fullest extent, I still haven't worked out where the Xmas came from, but I'd like to wish everyone on fanpop a Merry Christmas, no matter what bạn are doing and always have fun on Fanpop.

So Christmas, to me, is a very strange thing. In past years, the excitement has dimmed, the spirit-- though still present-- has become repetitive, and the gifts-- both giving and receiving-- receive thêm and thêm disappointed reactions. Basically, it has been slowly, but steadily losing its flavor. And while, a few years ago, I watched Taylor Momsen sing away in the new Grinch movie and wondered the same thing she did, my ending wasn't as cathartic as hers.

Eventually, though, I came to accept that giáng sinh just wasn't like it was for me ten years ago. When my brother would sneak into my room and wake me up at 3AM on giáng sinh Eve so we could go on a covert mission to spy on the presents Santa left us under the tree. When I pretended to still believe in Santa when I found out he wasn't real at eight-years-old, because I thought my thirteen-year-old big brother would be disappointed if I didn't. When my dad forced me to set my alarm clock for a reasonable hour-- seven, hoặc eight o'clock instead of three hoặc six. How I always reset it after he đã đưa ý kiến good night, and how he always came back in when I was asleep again to set it back.

While not necessarily limited to the giáng sinh holiday, White con voi Gift Exchanges are được ưa chuộng at this time of năm for clubs, associations, small groups, churches and offices around the United States. It is often a thêm affordable (and, possibly, fun) alternative to buying presents for everyone in the group. But what is a White con voi Gift Exchange?

The history
The story - almost certainly apocryphal - goes like this: in pre-colonial India, the rajahs would give gifts to their vassals as tokens of their esteem. Chief among these was the elephant. The con voi was both vehicle and beast of burden, a creature bạn could both ride to war and use to haul large weights, take goods to market, perform demolition, and the like. Essentially, the con voi was an extremely valuable creature. But a white con voi was considered sacred, and could not be put to work. So a rajah would be bestowing a great honor to a vassal bởi giving him a white elephant, while at the same time giving the vassal a rather huge burden. White elephants had to be kept, tended, groomed, fed, and exercised, all without getting the benefit of...

For all the people who want a happy bài viết about Christmas, I'm sorry to let bạn down, and maybe I'm a little pessimistic but now I'm getting older this is how I think about Christmas:

Five years cách đây (I was nine) I was sitting in my aunts car on giáng sinh Eve, and we were talking about a tv hiển thị in Holland called 'all bạn need is love'
I don't know if bạn know, hoặc have the hiển thị in America but the tv hiển thị is about people who get unexpected visits from people that they love, and then, for one night, they can forget all their problems and enjoy Chrismas Eve together. I thought that it was a silly show, they have a great day, but when the great ngày is over, they still have their problems.
My aunt (who was married to my uncle) thought that it was a great hiển thị and she was saying things like 'all bạn need is love' and 'I'm so glad that I've found realy love'
A couple months later, my uncle got a new girlfriend and my uncle and aunt got divorced.

I'm thinking about this now, because my uncle is coming, today, for Christmas, to have bữa tối, bữa ăn tối with us, but I know that my aunt (and the two children that my uncle and my aunt have) is still sad and that...

Remember when life was simple and everyone wore jellies, leg warmers, and parachute pants? If so, bạn were lucky enough to have lived some years in that crazy time of the 80’s. All bạn had to worry about was school and what GI Joe bạn were getting this năm (please God, let it be Storm Shadow)? Well, this danh sách is a flashback to those fun times of the 80's. Whether bạn were 8 hoặc 38 in the 80’s, you’ll enjoy this blast from the past. I’ve included all the best of cartoons, sit-coms, holiday specials, âm nhạc video and commercials. Humanity seems to have forgotten,
The true meaning of Christmas.
They think its only presents,
And they think it's giáng sinh trees, too.
Don't bạn remember what it's all about?
Have bạn forgotten the true meaning?
giáng sinh is thêm than just presents.
In fact, it's not about presents at all.
It's about things bạn can't bọc in a box,
And tie with a bow.
Peace on Earth and good will toward men,
That's what giáng sinh is all about!
Have bạn forgotten all about this?
Why is it only this time of year,
That we have to be nice to each other,
That we have to be kind?
Why can't it be all năm 'round?
Why can't it be every day?
Why does it have to be just this day?

Dear Santa, here's my giáng sinh list.
I hope you'll bring it all.
I've only asked for gifts my parents
can't find at the mall.

I'd like to have a UFO,
with aliens inside,
and maybe a Tyrannosaurus Rex
that I could ride.

A ninety-nine foot robot
is a present I could use.
I'll also need a time machine,
and rocket-powered shoes.

Please bring a gentle genie
who will grant my every wish,
and don't forget a wizard's wand,
and, yes, a talking fish.

Of course, I'll need a unicorn,
and won't bạn please provide
a dragon, and a castle
in the English countryside.

Of course, the weight of all these things
might cause your sleigh to crash.
If that's the case, dear Santa,
please feel free to just bring cash.

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to say Merry Cristmas to all of bạn fanpoppers out there.

If bạn believe in god hoặc bạn don't, it is always a special ngày for families and Những người bạn to hiển thị how they really feel about one another, either this being thực phẩm fights, real fights hoặc praying for the less fortunate, spend it as a way that is special to you.

Living in Australia, i have always had sweaty, hot christmas'. giáng sinh morning spent with my mum and in the afternoon, it is spent with my dad. This is all that i have basically known, i am just grateful that i get to spend one of my most favourite days of the năm with my whole family.

But remember that giáng sinh is not just about the presents hoặc the food, although it is the best part lol, it is about family, Những người bạn and santa.

So spread the joy and tình yêu that this season brings, spread it to everyone that bạn know and maybe even to those that bạn don't. Have a great giáng sinh :)

A White Grinch???
Since we're all still in giáng sinh mood, here is my comparison for both the 1966 animated short with its live action film made in 2000.

1966 Animated Short

This animated short that started it all! I tình yêu the vibrant and how colourful this animated cartoon, it's whimsical phim hoạt hình style will make bạn tình yêu this cartoon and Dr. Seuss, his artwork fascinates people even in today's generation, the theme song 'You're Mean One, Mr. Grinch!' has even been covered in the TV series, 'Glee' that I could not get it out of my head after listening to it recently.

2000 Live Action Film

When this film came to Malaysia, I watched it on the big screen and I'm very convinced with Jim Carrey's portrayal of the tiêu đề character! He has previously played 'The Joker' (correct me on this) and 'The Mask' from Người dơi and the Mask respectively, I really salute him as a comedian!
James Horner did a wonderful musical score once again, and the song 'Where Are bạn Christmas' performed bởi Faith đồi núi, hill is very touching and memorable.

Merry Christmas Fanpopping Friends
'Tis the season to be jolly!
I have had to remind myself of this fact constantly in the past week for I have had probably the most stressful week of 2008. All I wanted was to be in readiness and organized for my favourite time of năm but things do not always go as planned.
I decide to do some trang chủ renovations and paint my house back in September, the house did not really need a revamping but I was bored and thought it was time for a change. Little did I imagine that only a few days before giáng sinh the house would still be looking like a hurricane had swept through it.
I decided to get rid of some good quality but no longer needed furniture, so Những người bạn jumped at the chance. Although the furniture was being được trao away they still decided to take their time and collect it when they were good and ready, thereby leaving my trang chủ looking like a furniture warehouse for weeks. That hurdle out of the way and another one appears - the carpet cleaners could not get their act together with keeping their appointments.

I got this from the H & H Nursery newletter.

Fresh holiday greens such as wreaths and garlands have a definite life span, but with the following tips bạn can keep them looking good so bạn can enjoy their wonderful scent and beauty throughout the holiday season.

If bạn aren't hanging hoặc mounting your greens right away, lay them outside on the ground (best side up) in a cool shady location until bạn are ready to use them. Try to avoid getting the greenery wet.

Sunlight, heat and wind are the worst enemies for holiday greenery, so keep that in mind when hanging them up. Outdoors, wreaths will last much longer on doors with northern hoặc eastern exposures. Southern hoặc western exposures can cause greenery to dry and discolor much thêm quickly.

If hanging hoặc mounting greenery indoors, be sure to keep it away from heating vents, and try to maintain room temperatures of 70 degrees hoặc less. Also màn trập direct sunlight window exposures to prevent excess discoloration.

giáng sinh is a wonderful time of the year, all the presents, decorations, etc. Remember, though, giáng sinh can also be hectic and stressful. Here's just a few tips on how to survive the giáng sinh season.
1. Telling your mother that she has enough ornaments only gives her an excuse to buy more.
2. If bạn are dragged to a neighbor's house for a giáng sinh party, don't drink the eggnog if bạn plan to stay sober. Don't be like my uncle. That "spicy, different taste" is called rum.
3. If your grandmother is cooking giáng sinh dinner, and she has a terrible memory, don't count on her to take out the roast beef on time. Bring your own timer.
4. If you're not sure what to give your family for Christmas, get a gift card for their yêu thích restaurants hoặc stores, and bọc it up. Don't be like my aunt who gave me and my sister hideous outfits for Christmas.
5. Don't eat Santa's bánh quy, cookie until your younger siblings are asleep. Otherwise, your younger siblings will never trust bạn again.

Epiphany in Greece is known as Theofania hoặc Fota. The first sanctification of the Epiphany (The Enlightenment) takes place in church on the eve of the holiday. Afterwards, the priest goes from house to house holding a vượt qua, cross and a basil branch. As he walks through each house, he uses the basil to sprinkle (bless) all the areas of the home.

An old custom in Crete , which is almost forgotten today, was the preparation of the fotokoliva (boiled wheat with peas) on the eve of Epiphany. The fotokoliva was eaten bởi the people, but they also fed it to their livestock, which was believed to insure good health and fortune in the homes.

The big sanctification takes place the following day, January 6, the ngày of the Epiphany in Greece.

A long procession is formed and follows whatever road that leads to a body of water - the sea, a river hoặc even a reservoir. Up in front of the procession are the cherub icons, followed bởi the priests dressed in their best holiday splendor, then the VIPs, followed bởi all the people. In the bigger cities, the procession becomes thêm elaborate with the addition of âm nhạc and military contingents.

Kalikantzaroi, hoặc the Greek giáng sinh Sprites, are small blackish and hairy creatures, with long arms and tail, who reside in the bowels of the earth.
Kalikantzaroi are nasty

With a big saw, they compete to cut down the huge wooden stake which holds the earth in place. But the column is very thick and the sawing seems to go on forever.

Right before Christmas, however, Kalikantzaroi almost accomplish their mission and the column seems ready to fall. Overjoyed bởi their almost successful effort, but also fearful that the earth will topple over on their heads, they rush to the hàng đầu, đầu trang to bother and annoy the people.

Thousands of these creatures come up to the surface from every hole hoặc crack they can find. However, Kalikantzaroi are very much afraid of the light, so they hide during the day. But at night - that's when they strike! As soon as it's dark, they scramble from their hiding places to taunt and menace people. Because Kalikantzaroi are small, some even very tiny, they can get into the homes through chimneys, keyholes, even from the little cracks on windows and doors.
