"An anime" would refer to the show, not the character. "An anime character" would, of course, refer to the character. I think it's just a được ưa chuộng sort of thing among some anime fans, I think...

Actually the times I've seen the question,I assumed they meant a certain anime until I saw,not a character,well that is until I saw the answers,then again in the english language,it wouldn't make sense...,but I don't think it would be correct because "an anime" refers to the show,which is (as I đã đưa ý kiến before),if they wanted to talk about a certain anime character then they should add "character" but I guess it's became được ưa chuộng among some anime fans.
